About the Procedure Professionals Association

Vision – Maintain and promote continued improvement to standards for writing Procedures and all forms of Work Instructions. Promote the exchange of information among members to increase reliability, improve performance, and ensure the safe and efficient operation of member facilities.

Mission - The Procedure Professionals Association, Inc. (PPA) is the collective voice and leader in procedure and work instruction writing, processing, and associated training for member facilities that span industries such as commercial nuclear power generation, Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD), Oil and Gas. The association provides consistent and benchmarked guidance to its members. PPA accomplishes this mission by:

• Conducting an annual conference that provides opportunities for sharing of information, operating experience, and lessons learned. The annual conference provides exceptional opportunities for benchmarking and networking. For over 30 years, this conference has been the premier learning opportunity for procedure writers, reviewers, approvers, and program managers. PPA remains committed to continually improving this opportunity.

• Maintaining a training program and PPA Certified Instructors to deliver training to Procedure Writers and Planners at both member and non-member facilities.

• Maintaining an open and effective forum for member engagement throughout the year via the PPA Website and ready availability of Steering Committee members.

History - PPA was founded in August of 2005 at the closing of the 17th annual procedure symposium. The annual symposium had been sponsored and hosted by NUS/Scientech since its inception in 1988. Leaders in the procedure field proposed that an industry association would give stakeholders a strong platform from which to provide input to industry oversight groups such as the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), and Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).

In 2006 members of PPA were integrally involved in the development of the AP-907-001, Procedure Process, and AP-907-005, Procedure Writer's Guide, both elements of the Standard Nuclear Performance Model. The Standard Nuclear Performance Model is a comprehensive model that includes INPO, NEI, and EPRI process descriptions and provides a consistent basis for describing how work is done at nuclear stations. From these collaborative forums, a set of standards for technical procedure and work instruction development was developed that fits well in a much broader range of industrial settings.

In 2009 PPA partnered with INPO on two projects.

1. PPA and INPO collaborated on development of INPO Good Practice 09-004, Procedure Use & Adherence. This INPO Good Practice was published again in 2011 as INPO 11-003 - Guideline for Excellence in Procedure and Work Instruction Use and Adherence.

2. PPA completed development of the industry's first procedure writing certification and standardized training program based on the job-task analysis for procedure writers. This training program has been broadly adopted, as have the AP 907-001 and AP 907-005 standards with approximately 3,000 writers and planners having become PPA Certified to date. These writers and planners work at over 100 facilities in the US and abroad (e.g., Canada, Mexico, UAE, Japan, China, England, Ukraine, etc.).

In 2018 PPA incorporated to become Procedure Professionals Association, Inc. Incorporation as an independent non-profit 501(c)(6) Business League member driven organization enables PPA to continue to work toward its mission in a way that best fits the needs of the membership.
